If your business uses WhatsApp automation or is thinking about it, there’s a real pricing shift worth knowing about, and a second one coming in October.
What changed on August 1
Meta began charging for messages sent through Meta Business Agent, its own built-in AI reply feature on the WhatsApp Business API – billed per token, at roughly $2 per million tokens. This only affects the WhatsApp Business API (the Cloud API used for larger-scale automation, CRM integrations, and AI agents). If your team is just replying manually through the free WhatsApp Business App or WhatsApp Web, none of this touches you – that free tier is a separate system entirely.
What’s coming on October 1
A second, bigger change lands October 1: service and utility messages sent inside the 24-hour customer service window start costing money again, after being effectively free in that window for some time. Meta has said it will publish the exact regional rates no later than September 1, so businesses running WhatsApp automation at any real volume have about a month’s notice to plan around it once those numbers are public.
Why this matters beyond the invoice
This is exactly the kind of change that makes the difference between a WhatsApp automation that’s genuinely cost-efficient and one that quietly gets expensive at scale. It also reinforces something worth repeating: automation logic should be channel-agnostic, not built as if WhatsApp will always be the cheapest option by default. A bot architecture that only knows how to talk on WhatsApp becomes a liability the moment WhatsApp’s own pricing shifts under it — one built to work “on whatever channel your customers already message you on” adapts instead of getting stuck.
Practical takeaway: if you’re running WhatsApp automation through the Cloud API rather than manual replies, budget for October 1 now rather than being surprised by the invoice later.
